Student Survey
The Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Student Survey is more than just a survey. It is a powerful evaluation system that provides a total solution for measuring, assessing and reporting student data on known factors that affect academic achievement and other outcomes.
The Student Survey forms part of a suite of survey options that comprise The Learning Bar's school evaluation system.
The Student Survey is offered as two distinct surveys for middle and high school students (grades 6-12), and an Elementary School Survey for grades 4 and higher.
The two themed surveys - Effective Schools Survey and Healthy Schools Survey - each have their own unique measures; at the same time, they share a set of additional common measures. The unique measures are as follows:
Effective Schools Survey
This is our "flagship" survey that expanded from the TTFM "engagement-wellness-climate" survey that was developed over the past five years. Its unique measures include:
- Intellectual Engagement – using measures developed for, and with the permission of, the Canadian Education Association (www.cea-ace.ca), we report on student Interest, Motivation, and Effort, as well as student's perceptions of their own Academic Skills and Challenges.
- Quality Instruction - student perception of Effective Use of Learning Time, Relevance of their Schooling, and Rigor.
Healthy Schools Survey
As well as the common core measures, this survey offers a unique set of measures focused on Physical Health and Safety. These include:
- Nutrition, based on the Canada Food Guide
- Healthy Weight
- Risky Behaviours - in-depth measures on Use of Tobacco, Alcohol, Marijuana, Other Drugs, and Gambling, beyond simple prevalence.
- Sexual Health - in-depth measures of sexual health (prevention) and activity
Common Core Measures
With both of these unique surveys, we offer a Common Core of Measures, what we consider to be our Continuous Monitoring measures. At the start of the year, a district can choose which of these measures to include as part of the survey that all their schools will use for the year. The district may choose to de-select measures, or add others available from our extensive menu.
These Common Measures include the following Student Outcomes:
- Social Engagement - measures such as Participation in School Activities, Sense of Belonging, Use of After-School Time,Part-Time Work, Positive Relationships, and Volunteering
- Institutional Engagement - three measures on Valuing School Outcomes, Truancy, and Homework
- Emotional Health - measures of Anxiety, Depression and Self-Esteem
- Academic - self-reported student outcomes in Language Arts, Math and Science
The Common Measures also include potential Drivers of Student Outcomes, such as:
- School Context - School Safety, Bullying, and Advocacy at School
- Classroom Context - Teacher-Student Relations, Learning Climate, and Teacher Expectations for Success
- Family Context - Students' Schooling Aspirations, and Advocacy at Home
- Demographic Factors - featuring our unique "Replica School" measure based on national data from students sharing the same grade, sex and socio-economic characteristics as your students; in addition, the district can select Language Spoken at Home, Immigrant Status, Aboriginal Status, and Grade Repetition. In turn, each of these can be used to "drilldown" your online survey results.
Elementary School Survey
We are pleased to offer for the first time for the 2009-2010 school year an online survey composed specifically for elementary school students, for grade 4 and higher. Our Elementary School Survey covers:
- Social / Emotional Outcomes such as Participation, Truancy, Sense of Belonging, Use of After-School Time, and Emotional Health
- Physical Health outcomes such as Nutrition and Healthy Weight
- School Context including measures such as Bullying, School Safety, and Student Advocacy
- Classroom Context measures such as Effective Learning Time, Teacher-Student Relations, and Teacher Expectations for Success
In addition to the same robust online data collection and reporting features as our Effective Schools Survey (including drilldowns, interactive charts, replica school lines, national comparisons, custom Open-Ended and Multiple Choice Questions, Word Cloud for Open-Ended Question responses), we offer a downloadable Pre-Survey Lesson Plan for homeroom teachers to assist them with introducing students to surveys in general, and to the Elemntary School Survey in particular.
Please note: in schools comprised of both elementary and middle or high school grades, either the Elementary School Survey or the themed surveys for grades 6-12 can be used.
