Dr. J. Douglas Willms Elected to U.S. National Academy of Education

3 June 09 - Dr. J. Douglas Willms, President of The Learning Bar Inc., was recently elected to the prestigious U.S. National Academy of Education (NAEd). Dr Willms was chosen to become a member of the honorary society, which is comprised of 174 members worldwide, with only 5 members from Canada.

Founded in 1965, the NAEd seeks the advancement of the highest quality in education research and its use in policy formation and practice. Members are elected on the basis of outstanding scholarship or outstanding contributions to education. Dr. Willms is recognized internationally for his work on educational policy, in particular his statistical modelling that relates schools and families to learning outcomes.

After learning of the appointment, Dr. Willms reflected: "This isn't something you can work towards. It's not like striving to get tenure in the first part of your career. You can't strive for this kind of recognition. You just work hard, and in my case, hope your work has an important effect on children's lives."

Dr. Willms is also Professor, Canada Research Chair in Human Development, and Director of the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy at the University of New Brunswick.
